Green Movie Night in Irvington

Tomorrow night, the Irvington Green Initiative will present our very first environmental film, Kilowatt Ours, at Snips Salon. I was over there this afternoon to help set up, and all I can say is, get the popcorn ready.

Kilowatt Ours shows vividly the effects of coal mining. The costs to public health and the environment are huge, and as the film shows, there are alternatives. Here in Indy, it's so easy to switch to renewable energy. Just go to Indianapolis Power and Light's website to request green power. While there, you can request a free home energy efficiency kit.

My co-chair Laura and I have been talking about bringing environmental films to our neighborhood since last summer. In fact, it was that dream that spawned the whole IGI endeavor, which now includes smaller groups heading up recycling and bicycling campaigns, plastic reduction, a sustainability recognition program, and more. We have our own cloth tote bags with the beautiful logo below, created by Laura who is an artist. (They're for sale, $10 each.)

It is exciting to see something we set out to do actually becoming a reality, with so many unexpected bonus projects.

And it's not just our little group; it's local merchants as well who are thinking green. Snips is adjacent to a little organic grocery called Edibles Natural Food Market, which is owned by the same guys. They just expanded their selection of local foods, and they plan to be a drop for a community supported agriculture this year. Edibles will be open tomorrow night - the first 20 filmgoers to shop will receive compact fluorescent light bulbs.

It feels like there is a groundswell of support for the "greening" of Irvington, and I am so stoked to be part of it.

If you're in town, come and see us in action, Monday at 7 p.m. at Snips, 5612 E. Washington Street. We'll have snacks, and a post-film discussion led by Citizens Action Coalition's Kerwin Olson. It's free. But you can buy a tote bag if you really want to.
